1. WATER BALLOONS
Buy a few packages of water balloons, get a group of friends together, pull the hose out onto the lawn and get wet and wild.
2. ICE SKATING
A spot that will start your teeth chattering is the local indoor ice skating rink. Hang out and watch the skaters or better yet… brave it and hit the ice (hopefully, not literally)!
3. SLIP N' SLIDE
This one's for the kids only: A Slip n’ Slide party! It’s cool. It’s fun. It’s refreshing. Grownups: Cool off by watching the real kids go at it, instead.
4. WATER WAR
It’s war -- with water! Invite friends over with their best water guns and Super Soakers. Form teams and let the war begin. Keep dry towels and cools drinks on hand for later when it’s time to make peace.
5. KIDDY POOL
Buy an inexpensive inflatable kiddy pool. Inflate and toss it on the patio under an overhang or somewhere in the shade. Fill it with 4 inches of water. Grab a cool drink, a good book and then sit in the pool and enjoy!
6. MOVIE MARATHON
A couple of good movies, an extra large tub of popcorn and a huge soft drink are perfect for helping you forget how hot it is outside. Go with a friend or go alone.
7. A COLD FOODS DINNER
Hot food on a hot day? Why? Consider cold shrimp salad, chicken salad, cold gazpacho soup, cold steak wraps and a cold dessert instead.
8. ICE CREAM SUNDAE POT LUCK
Nothing says “cool” better than ice cream! Invite a bunch of friends over and ask everyone to bring an interesting ice cream flavor plus one topping. Spend the day sampling different creative combinations of sundaes. Keep in mind, this party will stretch across the entire day with ice cream being your breakfast, lunch and dinner.
9. WATER PARK
Wave pools, water coasters, raft rides, lazy river, tube slides and water volleyball are only a few of the many refreshing features offered at water parks. You’ll be under the hot sun, but feeling totally cool.
10. MASSAGE/FACIAL
A wonderful, cool and relaxing treat is a spa day that includes a massage or facial. What absolute bliss to feel pampered AND cool at the same time!
11. PERSONAL POPSICLE PARTY
For a cool and lazy afternoon, sit in front of a big fan eating popsicles and listening to favorite tunes on your iPod. Popsicles come in a yummy variety of flavors, and many are guiltlessly low in calories.
12. BOWLING
Bowling alleys are always cold. Text some friends with the promise of an afternoon of cool fun knocking down pins. Can’t bowl? Even better. You're blunders will add in lots of laughs too.
13. MUSEUMS VISITS
Museums of all kinds have one thing in common -- They’re cold! Enjoy a day at the museum and come home smarter, as well.
14. HANG OUT ON A HAMMOCK
Lazy days of summer are just not the same without at least one day of swinging in a hammock, in the shade, with a cool drink and a cool book.
15. FROLIC IN A FOUNTAIN
Interactive fountains are popular at many malls and amusement parks. The fountain jets squirt water and give you a wet way to cool off in an acceptable fashion. Don’t worry if most participants are five and under. You can be silly, crazy and cool off, too!
16. RUN THROUGH THE SPRINKLER
God didn’t create sprinklers for watering lawns alone. Running through them is refreshing, invigorating, fun… and you’ll get to see rainbows too!
17. ICE CHEST SNORKELING
Can’t afford a trip to the Caribbean? Create one in your backyard or on your patio! Buy a large Styrofoam ice chest, head out to the nearest "dollar store" and get inexpensive sea-like creature such a seashells and maybe even boats and mermaid dolls. Fill the styrofoam ice chest with water, toss in your "dollar store" finds, let your kids don their snorkel and let them dive in for a few hours of sea adventure!
18. WINTER PARTY
Throw a Christmas party in the middle of summer! Sing Christmas carols, watch the movie White Christmas, decorate an artificial tree, drink hot cocoa and, of course, turn down the a/c!
19. TOUR A CAVE
Have you ever taken a tour of a cave or cavern? Besides being beautiful, they are always cold and damp. A warm jacket and long pants will be welcome, even if it’s hot, hot, hot outside.
20. IF MONEY IS NO OBJECT... HEAD FOR SNOW COUNTRY!
Australia, Swiss Alps, Austria, Italy, France, Chile, and Argentina are some destinations where you can find snow in August. In fact, summer in the northern hemisphere is winter in Australia, and August is the height of their ski season! Pack your bags and hop on a plane to one of these destinations if you’re interested in snow skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or just plain rolling around in real snow in July, August and September.
